Data Security

Hard Drive Destruction Service

End-of-life computers should not be unwisely viewed as scrap, a simple donation or a hasty recyclable but as archives of confidential data. If a system is dumped, donated or refurbished and resold improperly, any remaining data could be accessed by those with criminal intent.

Deleting data is not enough. Data is only gone once it has been written over completely or physically destroyed. Files may stay on a computer's hard drive, where they may be retrieved easily, and some data resides in places beyond the hard drive. According to Dataquest, nearly 150 million disk drives were retired in 2002 up from 130 million in 2001. Although many such drives are destroyed, a significant number are redistributed to the secondary market often through multiple layers each less conscientious.

Approximately 10 million Americans will be affected by identity theft this year. A large number of them will become victims as a result of inadequate or improper data security.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that between 500,000 and 700,000 cases of identity thefts occur each year. Stolen information off these computers cost victims over $765 million annually!

GREENCITIZEN OFFERS ADVANCED DATA SECURITY SERVICES

Before you dispose of a computer you might consider having the hard disk completely destroyed. This is the only way you'll be sure your data will not be passed on to others. For more info, please contact GreenCitizen at 650.493.8700 x102 or info@greencitizen.com.

Corporate On-site Hard Disk Destruction
To protect your corporate confidential information, GreenCitizen offers corporate on-site hard disk erasure services. Hard disks are first asset tracked and then it is video-taped hard-disk crushing with a portable GreenCitizen hard disk crusher in a secured room. Crushed disks are then sent to a certified hard disk destructor where the hard disk is completely shredded. GreenCitizen closely manages this process and, if requested, will send you a certificate of hard disk destruction after the hard disk is physically shredded.

Drop-Off Hard Disk Erasure & Destruction
To protect your confidential information, GreenCitizen offers hard disk erasure and destruction at our Eco-center. Hard disks can be drop-offed for hard disk erasing or crushing. All hard disks will be sent to our Central crushing facility for processing. Hard disks are erased using a three-pass system that meets US Department of Defense disk sanitation standards (DoD 5220.22-M) and complies with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Erased disks are sent to a certified hard disk destructor where the hard disk is completely shredded. GreenCitizen closely manages this process and, if requested, will send you a certificate of hard disk destruction after the hard disk is physically shredded.

Cell Phone Erasure
To protect your company's confidential information, GreenCitizen offers cell phone erasure service. This process will erase all phone numbers, names and any other information in cell phones to give you added peace of mind. In order to be erased, phones must have some power available (either in the battery or with a power adapter).
