GreenCitizen™ Launches
New Concept in Electronics Recycling - April 20,
2005
Mayor Jim
Burch to Attend Earth Day Opening of Palo Alto
Center
PALO ALTO,
California—April 20, 2005—GreenCitizen,
Inc., a new electronics recycling management
company, today announced the opening of its first
Silicon Valley center in Palo Alto to be held
on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. The Honorable
Jim Burch, Mayor of Palo Alto will preside over
the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00
am.
The center, located
at 3180 Park Blvd., offers a clean, pleasant environment
where customers can drop off end-of-life electronics
and, at the same time, learn more about the importance
of responsible recycling.
“The amount
of obsolete electronics piling up in our offices
and homes is staggering,” said James Kao,
GreenCitizen’s Founder and CEO. “When
it’s not recycled properly, this e-waste
may end up in landfills here or in developing countries,
where it can cause serious environmental pollution.
But in order for responsible recycling to take
off, it has to be more convenient for consumers.
At GreenCitizen, we believe we’re taking
a fresh new approach to helping consumers manage
their end-of-life equipment.”
GreenCitizen offers
a variety of convenient customer services, including
drop-off at the Palo Alto Center, which is open
daily, hard disk destruction and cell phone erasure.
Items accepted include computer systems, CRTs/monitors,
TVs, cell phones, cartridges, batteries and more.
To ensure safe disposal, equipment recycled through
GreenCitizen will be sent only to California State
or EPA certified de-manufacturers and recyclers
who dispose of it according to industry best practices
and who share GreenCitizen’s commitment to
responsible recycling.
In addition, GreenCitizen’s
unique asset tracking system provides accountability
for the safe disposal of toxic materials found
in electronic equipment. Each major item received
at a GreenCitizen center is catalogued by both
a unique GreenCitizen ID number and its original
manufacturer serial number. This allows the tracking
of each item through each stage of the shipping,
sorting and de-manufacturing process. The data
gathered can serve as a “scorecard” to
help government agencies, corporations, OEMs, retailers
and environmental groups measure recycling efforts
in quantitative terms.
GreenCitizen also
offers a program to encourage and reward recyclers
through memberships and gift cards, as well as
sponsorship opportunities for companies and local
businesses to support responsible recycling.
“It’s
great to see a company like GreenCitizen provide
incentives to customers and raise awareness about
the need for electronics recycling,” said
Renee St. Denis, Director of Product Take Back
and Recycling in the Hewlett Packard Americas organization
and member of GreenCitizen’s Advisory Board
for Global Recycling Operations.
Grand
Opening Festivities
GreenCitizen’s Grand Opening festivities on April 22 will include
a special presentation of the Magic Planet® digital video globe from
Global Imagination® (www.globalimagination.com).
This 3D globe displays real and simulated acts of nature as they occur
across the world, such as the effect of pollution on the environment,
the results of burning off the Amazon rain forest or the causes of El
Niño. The center also features an educational wall where customers
can learn more about the harmful effects of e-waste on the environment.
